De Kelders is the picturesque suburb of the fishing village Gansbaai (also know for it’s shark-cage diving and marine safaris)\, and is situated on the Overstrand coastline within the Western Cape region. Many know Hermanus to be the whale-watching haven\, but its quieter neighbouring village is just as prolific in sightings\, without the crowds! \nThe type of whale that comes close to shore are mostly the southern right whale\, migrating from Antarctica in June and remaining in the relatively warm waters of South Africa for a few months. \nYou do not need to venture into the ocean to see the massive mammals! The village has numerous cliff paths to walk with excellent view of the bays where the whales come to rest. There are many different points of access\, so you can opt for a big hike or a shorter stroll. \nDuring these months whale sightings are pretty much guaranteed as this coastline is considered the world’s best destination for land-based whale watching. \nThe southern right whales are not too difficult to spot\, as they are on average 15m long and weigh up to 100 metric tons! They are dark grey or black\, with striking whitish-grey callosities or calluses\, patches of calcified skin\, on their head\, above their eyes\, or around their blowhole. They have a broad back\, with no dorsal fin. They arrive in the seas off this stretch of coastline in June and begin their breeding season immediately. Mating occurs under water\, but you might spot a group of males surrounding a female on the surface before she is ready to pick her partner and swim with him into the deep. The gestation period is one year and many females have specific birthing zones\, to which they return every three years. Mothers love playing with their offspring\, sometimes for up to several hours. Walker Bay is particularly popular for breeding\, calving\, and bringing up babies\, with a range of other whale behaviours on show as well! These include lobtailing\, when a whale slaps its tail on the top of the water and makes a loud clapping sound\, and spyhopping\, when a whale emerges vertically from the ocean and has a look around. There is also sailing\, holding the tail above the water\, and of course the breathtaking display of breaching\, immense leaps ending in the noisiest splash ever! Listen out for the ‘whoosh!’ of whales pushing water out through their blowholes too – and finally the grunts that carry for as much as a couple of kilometres!

On a purely practical level\, for ceremonial cacao\, the processing is kept as minimal and pure as possible. Freshly harvested beans are fermented and then dried\, but never heavily roasted. The husks are removed from the dried beans to leave broken cacao nibs. These nibs are then ground into a thick paste. The paste is molded and cooled into solid blocks\, then it’s ready to be used as ceremonial cacao. A block like this is similar to 100% chocolate with no sugar added\, but it is created simply\, without conching or tempering. The main intention is to leave the cacao in its most natural state\, retaining all the precious nutrients and energies that cacao may offer\, nothing added nor removed. Some of these benefits include: \n\nImproving mental alertness – so much so that the Alzheimer’s Society has a singing service to help those with dementia.\nLowering stress – this happens as the amount of cortisol decreases in a person’s bloodstream\, as a result of singing\nBoosting your confidence – singing in front of others (even a small audience) helps overcome stage fright\n\nBut why is Kirtan so important?\nHere’s a slightly spiritual perspective… \nWhen we gather to create sound\, we are coming together as community to celebrate\, remember and pay homage to a particular way of being – namely living a life of Truth\, believing in one Great Love (The Divine\, Great Spirit\, God or creator of universe)\, respect for others\, and high moral standards. \n1) Helps you learn the vibration of love:\nKirtan is the singing of love. We remember easily through singing because the tune and lyrics are still playing in your mind afterwards. \n2) Kirtan is a mechanism for knowledge transfer:\nThe wise elders and gurus were intelligent beyond their times. They realised that the message of the Great Love would need to be delivered through kirtan across the world. This was likely because the written word was not easily accessible at the time\, and because most people would not have been able to read it if it were available – because of low literacy. Kirtan is a platform to receive the knowledge that is there to guide every seeker\, through text (scripture)\, remembrance of the Great Love or Divine\, and truthful living. \n3) Kirtan teaches you how to listen:\nActive listening is something that requires energy and focus. It’s a skill that’s needed in every aspect of life; from family and work\, to volunteerism and leadership. Kirtan teaches us how to listen actively. The messages of love and wisdom\, delivered through kirtan\, can only be understood if a person is attentive. This means actively listening to what is being sung\, but also taking it one step further – practical application. Listening = love. When we listen to someone or something\, it shows either love or a certain level of respect. \nLet’s take another point of view. Think of the many conflicts that happen either at home or in the workplace. How many of these situations were a result of someone not listening or properly understanding a particular point? We all want to be listened to and understood. When we learn to listen to each other\, we’ll learn to listen to the Great Creator. \nTake the time to actively listen to the words and try to understand the greater meaning (or feel into their vibration to begin). From there\, ask yourself\, how can I apply this to my life?
